"Good Mourning" is a song performed by Halsey which is featured as the seventh track on the standard and as the eighth track on the deluxe edition of her sophomore studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, and serves as an interlude. It was released on June 2, 2017 through Astralwerks Records.

Background[]

Before the song was released Halsey tweeted out several lyrics from the song.[1][2][3][4] Moreover, the lyric "Don't trust the moon, she's always changing" is used as the Twitter bio for Luna Aureum.[5]

The song is an interlude and is from the perspective of the House of Aureum and their fear over Luna Aureum's relationship with Solis Angelus.[6]

The kid speaking in the song is Halsey's younger brother Dante Frangipane.[7] In a Twitter Q&A Halsey stated that she wanted "something that was innocent" and thought her brother would be the best fit.[7] Dante recorded his part of the song as a voice memo on his iPhone.[7]

Cross-references[]

  • The lyric "A city with the streets full of milk and honey" references the Bible's Promised Land which is described as "flowing with milk and honey".
  • Honey is also mentioned in "The Prologue": "Hands so bloody, tastes like honey".
  • The line "A hopeless place that flows with the blood of my kin" references part of the prologue of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet: "Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean".
  • The song also references the album's title and "Hopeless" multiple times: "A hopeless place [...]", "Perhaps hopeless isn't a place".
  • The lyric "Perhaps hopeless isn't a place nothing but a state of mind" is referenced on a vinyl version of the album which has an etching on the inner ring that states: "I hope hopeless is just a state of mind".
  • The lyric "Don't trust the moon, she's always changing" is a reference to the line "I can change my mind each day" from "Sorry".[8] Moreover, the lyric also references Luna Aureum.
  • The lyric "Sun is coming up oh, why" is a reference to the lyric "Every single night pray the sun will rise" from "Coming Down".[9]
  • Moreover, the song includes a sample of "Castle" that can be heard at around 45 seconds into the song.

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
They told me once, "There's a place where love conquers all"
A city with the streets full of milk and honey
I haven't found it yet, but I'm still searching
All I know is a hopeless place that flows with the blood of my kin
Perhaps hopeless isn't a place, nothing but a state of mind
They told me once, "Don't trust the moon, she's always changing"
The shores bend and break for her
And she begs to be loved, but nothing here is as it seems

[Outro]
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why...
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why...
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why...
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why...
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why...
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why...
Sun is coming up oh, why, oh, why, oh, why...
