Background[]
A snippet of the song was featured in the second trailer for the film.[1] The title was revealed via Amazon's virtual AI assistant, Alexa, on August 10, 2021.[2]
In an interview with Zane Lowe Halsey expressed the meaning of the song in regards to their gender identity:
- "Also, not for nothing, but the lead single is ‘I Am Not a Woman, I’m a God’ – it’s not a girl power album. From the jump, I’m like, ‘I’m not a woman.’ I’m not saying any of that. There’s no girl power in this album. … Being pregnant, writing this album, people are expecting girlishness, you know what I mean? And any time where I ever talk about womanhood, motherhood, femininity, I’m usually talking about it with a taste in my mouth."

The song was part of the Moment House livestream concert of some of the If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power songs on August 29, 2021. It was also released on the exclusive live album. On August 31, 2021 the song was serviced to US contemporary hit radio as the lead single from the album. Furthermore, a remix extended play was released on September 30, 2021 titled "I Am Not A Woman, I'm A God (Remixes)" with no prior announcement.

- During her performance as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on October 9, 2021, Halsey performed both this song and Darling.
