Halsey Wiki

"You Should Be Sad" (stylized in sentence case) is a song performed by Halsey. It is the third single of her third album, Manic, on which it is featured as the fourth track. It was released on January 10, 2020 through Capitol Records.

Background[]

The song was announced on December 3, 2019 through social media[1]. On January 8, 2020 Halsey announced that the song would be released as the album's fifth single on January 10 and also described the song as "wild" and "yee fuckin' haw" hinting at the song's country influences.[2] When asked what inspired her to do a country song she stated that "the most petty and heartbreaking songs all come from country" and that she wrote the song on her living room floor and in Nashville, Tennessee - a state known for its country influenced music.[3]

While talking about the making of the music video Halsey revealed that the song might be about G-Eazy: "Had the vision to do a “before he cheats” but instead about after he does haha."[4]

She later explained the song more through Spotify's storyline feature:

"I knew my album needed a really good break up song. I wanted it to be heart-wrenching, exhausted and a little bit petty. I thought, what better genre to turn to than 'Country.' The genre that has perfected the heartbreak song. I wrote the entire song on my guitar, on my living room floor."

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I wanna start this out and say
I gotta get it off my chest
Got no anger, got no malice
Just a little bit of regret
Know nobody else will tell you
So there's some things I gotta say
Gonna jot it down and then get it out
And then I'll be on my way

[Pre-Chorus]
No, you're not half the man you think that you are
And you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs, and cars
I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you
'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you

[Chorus]
Oh, I feel so sorry, I feel so sad
I tried to help you, it just made you mad
And I had no warning about who you are
I'm just glad I made it out without breaking down
And then ran so fucking far
That you would never ever touch me again
Won't see your alligator tears
'Cause, no, I've had enough of them

[Verse 2]
Let me start this off by saying
I really meant well from the start
Take a broken man right in my hands
And then put back all his parts

[Pre-Chorus]
But you're not half the man you think that you are
And you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, girls, and cars
I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you
'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you

[Chorus]
Oh, I feel so sorry (I feel so sorry)
I feel so sad (I feel so sad)
I tried to help you (I tried to help you)
It just made you mad
And I had no warning (I had no warning)
About who you are (About who you are)
Just glad I made it out without breaking down
Oh, I feel so sorry (I feel so sorry)
I feel so sad (I feel so sad)
I tried to help you (I tried to help you)
It just made you mad
And I had no warning (I had no warning)
About who you are (About who you are)
'Bout who you are

[Bridge]
Hey
Hey
Hey
Hey

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause you're not half the man you think that you are
And you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs, and cars
I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you
'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you

[Outro]
I feel so sad
You should be sad
You should be
You should be sad
You should be
You should be
You should be
